A lesão do balão carótida do rato imita o procedimento clínico de angioplastia realizado para restaurar o fluxo sanguíneo em vasos ateroscleróticos. Este modelo induz a resposta à lesão arterial distending da parede arterial, e desnuding a camada intimal de células endoteliais, causando, em última análise, remodelação e uma resposta hiperplástica intimal.
